SHOSUBA
Fascinated by Japanese culture and aesthetics we wanted to add a collection influenced by the country of Japan.
The first thing we wanted was to recreate their “savoir faire” handling of wood. So what we decided to do was the ancient technique of burning wood they used to protect all the facades of their homes in coastal areas, which they have used for more than 4 centuries. The appearance was unbeatable, and the technique did not require chemicals or stains.
So Shosuba was born, inspired by the technique called “Shou – Sugi – Ban” that literally translates as “Cedar Board Burned”. We decided to use Ash. We found that after burning its face, in addition to obtain a very intense carbon black, the woodgrain was marked in a fascinating way. The result was a beautiful and almost hypnotic aspect to the grain.
To highlight the material, we decided to let go with everything that was unnecessary producing a simple straight and harmonious surface.
To complement this main unit, we have expanded the series with a simple unit with mitred joints to make it as delicate as possible and we suggest the textured finish which combines well with the appearance of the countertop.
As an alternative and less conservative, whilst still in harmony with natural and simple environments of Japanese spaces we extended the series with the option of a countertop in natural ash but with marked grains. The result is a vibrant and harmonious product.
